CHAPTER ONE

The Quiet Listener

Elias Vargas lived on the east side of the city where coffee shops lined the streets and apartment lights flickered like restless stars.

He worked as a wood restoration specialist in a small shop tucked between a barber studio and an old vinyl store. Tourists walked by without noticing the place, though locals knew the workshop as a place where forgotten things came back to life beneath his hands.

He lived quietly. Morning arrived before sunrise. Prayer came before conversation. Listening came before speaking. People around him respected him, though few truly knew him.

What many never understood was one simple truth. Elias had spent years listening for God.

One Friday evening the sky shifted into shades of gold and deep indigo as city noise echoed between buildings. Something changed. Pressure moved through the atmosphere. A pull rose from deep inside his chest. Not physical. Spiritual.

Elias placed a hand over his chest and whispered one name. Jesus.

Warmth moved through him instantly. Something holy stirred. Something unseen responded. A line had formed between two worlds and heaven itself seemed to press against the city around him.

Everything was about to change.
