Chapter 8

When Peace Became a Teacher

One of the most surprising lessons Jesus taught me during that season came through a word I believed I already understood. Peace had always seemed straightforward to me. For most of my life, I associated peace with calm circumstances, healthy relationships, and the absence of conflict. Peace appeared to be the natural result of life moving in a favorable direction. When conversations went well, peace seemed present. When relationships felt stable, peace seemed present. When difficult situations faded into the background for a while, peace seemed present then as well.

Looking back now, I realize that what I often called peace was something else entirely.

Many of the seasons I considered peaceful were actually periods of temporary calm. Those seasons were real, and many of them contained moments that I still cherish. Meaningful conversations occurred during those times. Laughter returned. Hope felt renewed. The future appeared brighter than it had before. Whenever difficult patterns seemed absent, I found myself breathing a little easier and allowing optimism to regain its footing.

Nothing about those experiences was false.

The problem was not that those moments lacked value. The problem was that I gradually began depending upon those moments to provide something they were never capable of sustaining. Temporary calm can create relief, though relief and peace are not always the same thing. Relief depends upon circumstances improving. Relief depends upon tension decreasing. Relief depends upon external conditions becoming easier to navigate.

Peace operates differently.

As Jesus continued working within my heart, I began recognizing how much of my emotional stability had become connected to circumstances beyond my control. A good day could lift my spirits. A difficult conversation could diminish them. A season of harmony could restore hope. Another conflict could quickly unsettle that hope. Without realizing it, I had allowed too much of my emotional well being to rise and fall according to conditions that constantly changed.

Jesus was inviting me into something deeper.

The peace He offers is not dependent upon perfect circumstances. His peace does not arrive only when every relationship feels healthy or when every question receives an answer. His peace remains available in uncertainty because its source is not found within circumstances. Its source is found in Him.

That realization did not arrive through a single dramatic moment. It developed gradually as I spent time in prayer and reflection. Many of my conversations with Jesus during that season centered upon understanding. I wanted answers. I wanted clarity. I wanted to know what was happening and what I should do about it. Although those desires were understandable, I slowly recognized that Jesus was teaching me something even more important than understanding every situation.

He was teaching me where to place my trust.

Trust anchored in circumstances will always feel unstable because circumstances constantly change. Trust anchored in another person's choices will always remain vulnerable because people are imperfect. Trust anchored in outcomes will always struggle because the future remains beyond our control. Jesus was patiently teaching me to anchor my heart in Him rather than in the shifting conditions surrounding me.

As that lesson took root, something unexpected began happening.

Questions still existed.

Concerns still existed.

Certain situations remained unresolved.

Yet peace began growing in places where anxiety had previously lived.

The growth occurred slowly enough that I hardly noticed it at first. Looking back now, I can see that Jesus was building a foundation beneath me while I remained focused upon the storms around me. The storms had not disappeared. Some continued for far longer than I would have preferred. What changed was the place where I was standing.

Instead of measuring my sense of security by the quality of a conversation, I began measuring it by the consistency of God's presence. Instead of looking for reassurance in circumstances that changed from one season to the next, I began finding reassurance in a Savior who never changed. That shift did not remove every burden from my shoulders overnight, though it did begin changing the way those burdens affected me.

Peace became a teacher.

Peace revealed how often I had been carrying concerns that belonged in God's hands. Peace revealed how much energy I had invested in trying to anticipate outcomes before they arrived. Peace revealed how frequently I had confused responsibility with worry and compassion with control. The more honestly I examined those realities, the more I understood why Jesus continually invited people to place their burdens upon Him.

Many of the burdens weighing upon me had originated from a sincere desire to love well. I wanted to help. I wanted to understand. I wanted to encourage growth, healing, and restoration wherever possible. Those desires came from a good place. Yet even good desires can become exhausting when they convince us to carry responsibilities that were never ours to carry.

That realization marked an important turning point in my journey.

For years, I had focused primarily upon understanding what was happening around me. Jesus was now teaching me to examine what was happening within me. The more I learned about His peace, the more clearly I could see the difference between healthy responsibility and unnecessary burden. The distinction mattered because one leads to freedom while the other quietly drains strength that God never intended us to lose.

Looking back now, I believe peace became one of the most important teachers of that season because peace revealed truths that fear could never reveal. Fear kept my attention focused upon uncertainty. Peace directed my attention toward Jesus. Fear encouraged me to imagine every possible outcome. Peace reminded me that God was already present within every tomorrow I had yet to reach.

For the first time in a very long time, I began realizing that my future did not depend upon my ability to carry every burden successfully. My future rested safely in the hands of Jesus.

That realization brought a deeper sense of rest than any temporary season of calm could ever provide, and it prepared me for another lesson that would change the way I understood love, responsibility, and the weight I had been carrying for far too long.
