Chapter 2

A Message on the Screen

The decision did not feel life changing at the time.

Most significant moments rarely do.

Life had settled into a rhythm that felt familiar. Work filled the days. Church provided stability. Family remained a source of encouragement. The sharp edges of heartbreak had begun to soften, leaving behind a quieter season of reflection and rebuilding.

Although healing had taken place, certain empty spaces remained. Those spaces were not defined by desperation or sadness. They were defined by possibility. Somewhere deep within my heart remained a belief that meaningful connection was still possible and that one difficult chapter did not have the authority to determine the rest of my story.

That belief eventually led me to download a dating app.

The decision felt surprisingly ordinary. Millions of people used dating apps every day. Success stories appeared everywhere. Friends spoke about relationships that had started with nothing more than a profile picture and a simple greeting.

Still, a certain hesitation remained.

Creating a profile felt strangely vulnerable. A profile is more than a collection of photographs and personal details. A profile is an introduction. A declaration that says, "This is who I am." A quiet admission that says, "I am willing to be seen."

For someone emerging from the end of a marriage, that step carries significance.

Questions naturally surfaced.

Would anyone be interested?

Would meaningful conversations develop?

Would genuine connections be possible?

Like many people entering the world of online dating, I carried equal amounts of curiosity and caution.

Days passed as profiles appeared and disappeared with the movement of a finger across a screen. Most interactions felt brief and forgettable. Some conversations lasted only minutes. Others never moved beyond a greeting.

Then one profile appeared that seemed different.

Nothing about that moment suggested that my life was about to change.

There was no warning.

No sense of danger.

No indication that the path ahead would eventually involve years of conversations, emotional investment, unanswered questions, financial complications, and discoveries that would challenge everything I believed to be true.

What existed in that moment was simple.

A profile.

A photograph.

A message.

A conversation waiting to begin.

Looking back now, I often think about how ordinary the beginning appeared. Life changing experiences rarely announce themselves. They enter quietly, disguised as opportunities, friendships, relationships, and possibilities.

At that moment, all I saw was the possibility of getting to know someone new.

The first message appeared on the screen.

I had no way of knowing that a simple greeting would become the opening line of a story that would follow me for years.
