Brad woke to the faint dropping of rain against the window. He lay in bed for a moment, listening to the rhythm, feeling its calming effect, yet his mind refused to rest. The day ahead promised the same monotony: commute, work, bills, and the gnawing question of purpose that seemed to hover over him like a cloud he could not shake.
From the bedroom doorway came the sound of tiny footsteps. Gabe, his eight-year-old son, bounded in, hair damp from the morning shower, a small toy truck in hand. “Daddy, wake up! I have an idea for breakfast!”
Brad smiled faintly, swinging his legs over the side of the bed. “What is it this time, buddy?”
“Pancakes! But they must be shaped like dinosaurs!” Gabe exclaimed. His enthusiasm was contagious, momentarily lifting the heaviness in Brad’s chest.
Over breakfast, they built a tower of pancakes, frosting and syrup forming imaginary scales on each dinosaur. Brad laughed more genuinely than he had in weeks. Yet even in these moments, a quiet restlessness lingered.
Justin’s call came mid-morning, breaking the lull. “Brad, you need to get out of the apartment this weekend. Gabe, too. Go to the park, the lake, somewhere. Breathe. Trust me, it’ll do you both good.”
Brad nodded, his gaze lingering on Gabe, who was now lining up his dinosaurs for battle. “Yeah, I think we could use that,” he said softly.
Later that night, Brad lay awake in the dim glow of the bedside lamp. His thoughts churned, unanswered questions, regrets, fears. Then came a dream: a dark forest, rain soaking him, mud pulling at his feet. Yet ahead, a warm light glowed, and a gentle voice whispered, “I am with you. Do not fear.”
He woke with his heart pounding; the words etched into his mind. Sitting up, he watched his son sleep peacefully. Brad realized that for the first time in a long time, he sensed God’s presence nudging him, not loudly, but persistently. Life’s answers were not ready to be revealed fully, but he understood one truth: he was not alone.
That night, he prayed softly, words almost inaudible. “Jesus, I don’t know the path, but I want to follow. Guide me.” He felt a flicker of peace, subtle, but undeniable; a river beginning to flow in the quiet corners of his heart.
The storm outside continued, but inside, Brad sensed the first drops of transformation.
