Months had passed since Brad first freed the sparrow in the park. Life had not become effortless, yet it had grown richer, more meaningful. Work still presented challenges, bills still came due, and responsibilities weighed heavily, but something had shifted. Brad walked differently through each day, aware of a subtle, guiding presence that shaped his choices, softened his reactions, and offered courage when he needed it most.
One evening, as the sun dipped below the city skyline, Brad and Gabe sat on the rooftop of their apartment building. The city stretched out below them, lights flickering in the early evening like rivers of gold and silver. Gabe leaned against his father, his small hand resting in Brad’s.
“Daddy,” Gabe said softly, “the lights look like your vision. All those people out there… maybe we can help some of them too, like you did today.”
Brad smiled, a warmth spreading in his chest. He had thought the vision was about a distant, abstract future, yet he saw now that it had been unfolding gradually in small, tangible ways. Every kind word, every act of obedience, every lesson shared with Gabe and the children at the community center had been part of the river God was creating in his life.
He looked down at his son. “You know, buddy, the Holy Ghost isn’t just a feeling. He’s a river that flows through us. Sometimes we see it in big things, like helping people at the center. Sometimes it shows up quietly, like being patient, choosing to trust God, or freeing a bird. But it’s always there, shaping us to be who God created us to be.”
Gabe’s eyes widened. “So, we’re like rivers too?”
“Yes,” Brad said, squeezing his son’s hand. “We let God’s love flow through us. And when we do, it touches others, even if we can’t see it.”
That night, Brad prayed with Gabe beside him, thanking Jesus for guidance, for courage, and for the opportunity to reach people who felt lost, overlooked, or forgotten. He prayed for the wisdom to continue walking faithfully, to nurture Gabe’s spiritual understanding, and to remain a vessel for God’s work in the world.
As he lay in bed afterward, Brad reflected on the months that had changed him. The restless heart he had once carried now flowed with purpose and peace. He understood that the Holy Ghost’s attractiveness was not in a dazzling display but in transformation; quiet, steady, and life-altering.
He remembered the sparrow, the stadium vision, the moments of fear at work, and the timid, curious teens at the community center. Each had been a thread in the river God was weaving through his life. And Gabe, with his innocent faith and perceptive heart, was a living reminder of how God could shape the next generation through love, guidance, and example.
Brad whispered a final prayer before sleep: “Jesus, let Your river continue to flow in me and through me. Let me be a voice for the unreachable, a guide for my son, and a light in the dark places. Let others see You through my life.”
Gabe, half-asleep, murmured, “I love You, Daddy.”
“I love you too, buddy,” Brad whispered back, feeling the river of God’s Spirit move through him in that quiet, perfect moment.
The city slept around them, unaware of the small but powerful currents of hope flowing through one father and his son. In the dark, God’s Spirit continued to work, attracting, shaping, and transforming rivers in the dark, reaching farther than anyone could see.
