CHAPTER FIVE

His Father's Shadow

David's father always stood as a towering figure throughout his life. Discipline shaped every lesson. Expectations filled every room. Mistakes stayed hidden. Emotions stayed buried. Weakness remained something to conceal.

Those lessons followed David into adulthood. Reliable. Strong. Dependable. Quietly broken.

One evening a phone call interrupted dinner preparations. His father wanted him to come over. Tension immediately tightened inside David's chest.

Aaron's words echoed once again.

Strength does not hide pain. Strength faces pain.

David arrived and found his father sitting at the kitchen table. Arms crossed. Silence waiting. Years of unspoken words filled the room.

"You've seemed different lately," his father finally said. "I don't know what's going on with you."

David felt old emotions rise. Years of swallowed tears. Years of expectations. Years of pressure.

This time hiding no longer felt possible.

"I've been hurting." "Physically." "Emotionally." "I've been pretending I could carry everything alone." "And that pretending has been destroying me."

His father's face changed. David prepared himself for correction. Prepared himself for old responses. Prepared himself for disappointment.

None arrived.

His father slowly leaned backward and sighed.

"I didn't know."

"I thought teaching strength meant teaching silence." "Maybe I was wrong."

Emotion caught in David's throat. Words felt difficult.

"I always believed strength meant hiding pain." "Now I know hiding only made everything heavier." "I needed truth." "I needed someone willing to say difficult things."

Silence returned. Gentler now. Softer.

His father's eyes lowered. "I want to do better." "I may not always know the right words." "But I want you to know I'm listening."

Something shifted. Years of weight lifted slightly. Not completely. Enough.

Walking home later that night felt different. Pain remained. Memories remained. Questions remained. Yet freedom had entered places where silence once lived.

David whispered quietly beneath the night sky:

"Thank You, God." "Thank You for showing me that love doesn't hide."

Hope flickered again. Small. Steady. Real.
