Close in Appearance, Far in Heart

Scripture

“Jesus said to him, I am the Way and the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except by (through) Me.” John 14:6

Devotion

To call Jesus a liar is to deny His very essence. He is Truth. Every word He spoke was Spirit and life. Yet, it is possible to say we follow Him while living in a way that contradicts His truth. Judas is the sobering example: he walked with Jesus, heard His teaching, even participated in ministry, but his heart was never truly surrendered.

Jesus Himself warned, “Yet there are some of you who do not believe” (John 6:64). Judas looked at the part but lacked the faith that saves. When the pressure came, he betrayed the One who loved him. And here’s the hard reality: without watchfulness, we too could slip into denial.

Peter also stumbled, denying Jesus three times. Peter returned in repentance, while Judas chose despair instead of grace. The difference wasn’t perfect, it was response. One ran back to Savior. The other turned away.

So, Jesus reminds us: “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of My Father” (Matthew 7:21). Following Him is not about proximity but intimacy. Not about looking closely but being surrendered deep within.

Reflection

• Am I following Jesus in truth or only in appearance?
• Do my words and actions align with His teaching?
• When I stumble, do I run back to Him like Peter, or hide in guilt like Judas?

Hope & Promise

The good news is this: “If we walk in the light, as He is in the light… the blood of Jesus… purifies us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). His grace is greater than our weakness. His truth steadies our steps. Each day, we are invited to walk closely, humbly, and honestly with Him. Because without Him, any of us could betray. But with Him, we are held by grace.
