Poison or Medicine

Proverbs 18:21

Scripture:

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it.” Proverbs 18:21

Devotion:

Words carry power. Every sentence spoken moves in one of two directions, bringing life or releasing harm, building up or tearing down, healing or wounding. Speech never remains neutral, since what is spoken leaves impact behind.

Moments from the past often reveal this truth clearly. Certain words still echo with pain long after they were spoken, while others continue to bring comfort, encouragement, and strength. The tongue holds influence that reaches far beyond the moment.

Scripture reveals that this power is not symbolic. Life and death rest within what is spoken. Words shape atmosphere, influence identity, and affect the direction of relationships, thoughts, and decisions.

Transformation begins as the heart is changed by God. As He restores what is within, speech begins to reflect that work. Words grow softer, wiser, and more intentional. Life becomes something spoken over self, family, future, and even those who oppose.

A choice stands before every moment of speech. Words can function as poison, spreading harm and negativity, or as medicine, bringing healing, hope, and restoration.

Allow God to shape what comes from your mouth. Let encouragement replace criticism, truth replace negativity, and praise rise where complaint once lived. A life surrendered to Him speaks differently.

Prayer:

Lord, awareness grows regarding the power carried within my words. Shape my speech so that life flows from my mouth rather than harm. Replace careless words with wisdom, and fill my heart with truth that produces healing.

Use my voice to encourage, to restore, and to speak hope into every space I enter. Let my words reflect Your heart and bring life wherever they are heard. In Jesus’ name, amen.
