Power Over Your Tongue

Psalm 52:2 • James 3:6–8 • Proverbs 12:18

Scriptures:

“Your tongue devises wickedness: it is like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.” Psalm 52:2

“The tongue is like a fire. It is full of evil and can corrupt the whole body. It can set a person’s life on fire, and it is set on fire by hell itself. People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, but no one can tame the tongue. It is wild and full of deadly poison.” James 3:6-8

“There are those who speak rashly, like the piercing of a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.” Proverbs 12:18

Devotion:

Strength isn’t just about what we do with our hands, it’s about what we do with our words. Scripture is clear: the tongue holds power. It can build up or tear down, heal or destroy, bless or curse.

The Bible compares our words to a sharpened razor and a wildfire. One careless sentence can wound someone’s spirit. One outburst of anger can fracture a relationship. One sarcastic remark can plant insecurity that lasts for years.

And in today’s world, the “tongue” isn’t limited to what we say, it includes what we type, post, and share. A single post can be shameful. A thoughtless text can stir division. A forwarded message can spread harm.

Jesus warned that we’ll give an account for every idle word (Matthew 12:36). That’s not to scare us to remind us that words matter. They shape worlds.

The truth is: we can’t tame the tongue on our own. It takes the Holy Spirit to transform our speech to replace sarcasm with grace, gossip with truth, criticism with compassion. Through Him, we can become people whose words bring life.

People who know when to speak, when to stay silent, when to correct in love, and when to simply listen.

Prayer:

Lord, help me speak with wisdom, truth, and love. Tame my tongue and fill my heart so that what flows out of me builds others up, not tears them down. Let my words bring healing, not harm, grace, not grief. In every conversation, text, or post, may I reflect You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
