The Spirit and His Gifts

Living within, working through

Scriptures:

“Now there are distinctive varieties of spiritual gifts… but it is the same Spirit who grants them and empowers them in believers.” 1 Corinthians 12:4

“Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?” 1 Corinthians 3:16

Devotion:

The Holy Spirit Himself is God’s greatest gift to every believer. When you accepted Jesus, He came to live inside of you, filling your heart with God’s presence and marking you as His own. That’s not something you earn or beg for; it’s a promise.

The Spirit doesn’t just live quietly within you. He also works through you. He gives gifts to His children, unique abilities that reveal God’s power and love. Some speak words of wisdom, some pray in tongues, some prophesy, some bring healing, and some carry great faith. These are not the Spirit Himself, but the expressions of His presence flowing out of you.

It’s like a lamp filled with electricity: the electricity (the Spirit) is what makes the lamp alive, but the light shining out (the gifts) is how others see the power at work. The Spirit is the Person; the gifts are the overflow.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit, thank You for living inside of me. Teach me to walk daily in Your presence and to stay filled with Your life. Use me as a vessel for Your gifts, not for my glory but to bless others and point them to Jesus. In Jesus name, amen.

Story Time

The Quiet Prayer and the Bold Word

Anthony was a young believer who loved God deeply. He knew the Holy Spirit lived in him, but he often wondered why some people seemed to flow in spiritual gifts, like prophecy or tongues, while he didn’t.

One evening during a small group meeting, the leader asked if anyone needed prayer. A woman in the circle began to weep, sharing that she felt forgotten and unseen by God. Anthony’s heart pounded. A thought, clear and gentle, rose inside him: “Tell her I see her.”

At first, Anthony hesitated. Was that me? Or was it the Holy Spirit? As the woman kept crying, he whispered a simple prayer: “Holy Spirit, I surrender. Use me if this is You.”

With trembling voice, Anthony spoke: “Sister, I believe the Lord wants you to know, He sees you, and He hasn’t forgotten you.”

The woman gasped, covering her face. Through tears she said, “That’s exactly what I was praying before I came here tonight.” The whole room was filled with peace.

Walking home later, Anthony realized something important. The Spirit had already been living inside of him from the moment he gave his life to Jesus. But that night, the Spirit also gave a gift; an utterance of encouragement, a prophetic word; to bless someone else.

Anthony learned that the Spirit is the Person who abides in us, and the gifts are how He works through us.
