The Subtle Danger of Pride

Scripture

“Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18

Devotion

Pride doesn’t always roar. Sometimes it whispers, softly convincing us we’re self-sufficient, better than others, or above correction. It can wear a confident mask, but at its core, pride puts “self” first. The danger is sneaky: pride makes us feel good about ourselves just enough to set us up for a fall.

Scripture doesn’t warn us about pride because God wants to keep us small, but because He wants to keep us safe. Pride can cloud our judgment, but humility opens our eyes. It lets us grow, listen, and rely on God instead of our own strength. Jesus, even though He had every reason to boast, chose humility, even to the point of the cross.

When we walk humbly, we walk close to God. Humility invites His grace (James 4:6), wisdom (Proverbs 11:2), and strength. It protects us from the kind of overconfidence that leads to trouble.

Prayer

Lord, help me see if there’s any pride in my heart. Help me walk humbly, trusting in Your wisdom, not my own. Let me show the humility of Christ in my thoughts, words, and actions. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Challenge

Today, take a moment before reacting or making decisions. Ask yourself: “Is pride driving this? Or is it humility?” Let the Spirit guide you toward the path that honors God.
