Trained for Heaven

Story Time

The New Job

Brad stood at the entrance of the tall office building, tie slightly crooked, heart pounding. This was his first day at his new job, his dream job. The excitement was tangled with nerves. Everything about it felt unfamiliar. The elevator buttons. The jargon. Even the smell of the office coffee.

When he arrived at his desk, a friendly voice greeted him. “Hey, I’m Ashley. I’ll be training you.” “Training?” Brad echoed, somewhat surprised. “I thought I’d just jump in and figure things out.” Ashley laughed. “That’s one way to get overwhelmed. Trust me… without training, all this will feel like a foreign language.”

The first few days were tough. Brad made mistakes. He forgot passwords, confused client names, and even used the wrong template in an important email. Ashley was patient. She explained the purpose behind every task, not just the how but the why. Little by little, Brad stopped second-guessing. Processes became patterns. Confidence replaced confusion.

One afternoon during their lunch break, Ashley leaned over and said, “You know, Brad, this kind of reminds me of our walk with God.” Brad looked up, curious. She continued, “I used to think heaven was just some place I’d get to eventually, like it would all work itself out. The more I’ve followed Jesus, I’ve realized that this life, it’s training. Every act of obedience, every sacrifice, every holy conversation... it's practice for eternity.” “Holy conversation?” Brad asked. “Yeah,” Ashley smiled. “Talking about God, choosing uplifting words, speaking truth when it’s easier to stay silent. Even at this moment right now. We’re not just chatting over lunch. We’re sharpening each other, training our tongues and hearts to speak like citizens of heaven.” Brad nodded slowly. It clicked. “So, you’re saying, heaven isn’t just a destination, it’s a lifestyle we’re already stepping into?” “Exactly. Walking with God now is walking as if heaven’s doors are already within sight. The more we walk with Him, the more natural it feels, so when we finally arrive, it won’t feel like a stranger’s land... it’ll feel like home.”

That evening, Brad walked home with a renewed purpose. He realized that training for heaven wasn’t just about reading the Word or praying occasionally, it was about living every moment, every conversation, every decision as though he was already in the presence of God. Because in a way... he was.

He whispered, “Lord, let my life today reflect my forever with You.”

Moral

Spiritual training isn’t just about big moments, it’s found in the daily walk, the hard choices, and the holy conversations. When we live like heaven is near, we grow familiar with its ways. The more we train now, the more natural eternity becomes. Heaven won’t feel far off, we will feel like we’ve been walking toward its gates all along.

This story reflects the truth of the devotion “Trained for Heaven” that godliness is not just a future goal, but a present discipline. Just as physical training prepares us for earthly tasks, spiritual training prepares us for eternity. Living by God’s Word, praying, forgiving, and loving like Jesus aren’t just rules, they’re the very tools that shape us for the life to come. If we walk with God now, we’ll recognize heaven not as a stranger’s land... but as home.

Trained for Heaven

Scripture

“Stay away from ungodly stories and silly myths. Instead, train yourself to live a godly life. Physical exercise is good for a little, but spiritual training helps in every way, because it brings blessings for this life and the life to come.” 1 Timothy 4:7–8

Devotion

We often think heaven is this mysterious, far-off place we’ll simply arrive at one day. Walking with God now is actually training for the life to come.

Think about it like this: when you start a new job, you go through training. Why? Without it, the work won’t make sense, it’ll feel overwhelming, unfamiliar, even impossible. When you’re trained, you know what to expect. You grow confident. The unfamiliar becomes second nature.

In the same way, living in God’s ways; day by day, choice by choice; is training for eternity. Prayer is training. Forgiveness is training. Loving your enemies is training. Saying “yes” to Jesus and “no” to self is training. The more we walk in His ways now, the more familiar heaven becomes, because we’re already learning to live in God’s presence.

If you don’t train, heaven might feel like a foreign land. But if you’ve spent your life walking with the King, then entering His kingdom won’t feel strange, it’ll feel like going home.

Prayer

Lord, train my heart to love what You love. Let my everyday walk with You prepare me for forever with You. I don’t want to just aim for heaven. I want to live like I belong there now. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
