“Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and they who indulge in it shall eat the fruit of it.” Proverbs 18:21
Words carry power. Every sentence spoken moves in one of two directions, bringing life or releasing harm, building up or tearing down, healing or wounding.
Speech never remains neutral, since what is spoken leaves impact behind.
Words can function as poison spreading harm or medicine bringing healing.
Moments from the past often reveal this truth clearly. Certain words still echo with pain long after they were spoken, while others continue bringing comfort, encouragement, and strength.
The tongue holds influence reaching far beyond a single moment.
Speech Shapes Atmosphere
Scripture reveals this power is not symbolic. Life and death rest within what is spoken.
Words shape atmosphere, influence identity, and affect the direction of relationships, thoughts, and decisions.
Negative speech spreads quickly, though encouragement and truth carry the power to restore what criticism damages.
Speech shaped through grace becomes a source of healing rather than destruction.
Transformation Begins Within
Transformation begins as the heart is changed through God.
As He restores what is within, speech begins reflecting that same work outwardly.
Words grow softer, wiser, and more intentional. Life becomes something spoken over self, family, future, and even those standing against you.
A surrendered heart eventually produces surrendered speech.
Encouragement replaces criticism. Truth replaces negativity. Praise rises where complaint once lived.
A life surrendered to Jesus speaks differently.
The Conversation That Changed Everything
Emma barely noticed the damage at first.
Sarcasm had become normal. Frustration filled conversations. Sharp responses slipped out almost automatically whenever stress increased.
One evening, her son quietly stopped talking halfway through dinner.
Silence settled across the table.
Then he asked softly:
“Why does it feel like you’re always angry with me?”
The question pierced deeper than any argument ever could.
Later that night, Emma sat alone reading Scripture when one verse stopped her completely:
“Death and life are in the power of the tongue.”
Conviction rose immediately.
Words spoken carelessly had created wounds she never intended to leave behind.
Prayer followed through tears.
“Lord, teach me how to speak life.”
Transformation came gradually afterward.
Tone softened.
Patience grew.
Encouragement became intentional.
Months later, her son smiled during dinner and said:
“You feel different now.”
Grace had begun changing more than speech.
Grace had changed the heart producing those words.
Prayer
Lord, awareness grows regarding the power carried within my words. Shape my speech so life flows from my mouth rather than harm.
Replace careless words with wisdom and fill my heart with truth producing healing.
Use my voice to encourage, restore, and speak hope into every space I enter.
Let my words reflect Your heart and bring life wherever they are heard. In Jesus’ name, amen.
