Every believer has a conscience, a God given awareness that helps distinguish right from wrong. Yet a conscience is not something that remains unchanged. It can become either seared through continual resistance to God's voice or sharpened through humble submission to His truth.
The direction we choose determines whether our hearts grow sensitive to God or slowly become numb to His conviction.
A Seared Conscience
Paul warned Timothy about people whose consciences had become seared, like skin that has been burned until it loses feeling. A seared conscience no longer responds as it once did. Sin becomes easier to justify. Conviction grows quieter. What once troubled the heart eventually becomes normal.
This condition rarely develops overnight. It is usually the result of repeatedly ignoring God's correction until His voice is drowned out by our own desires.
A Sharpened Life
Proverbs paints an entirely different picture. Iron sharpening iron speaks of refinement through healthy relationships, godly correction, and a willingness to grow. Sharpening involves friction, but that friction produces strength instead of hardness.
People who desire to follow Christ do not fear correction. They welcome it because they understand that God often uses faithful believers to strengthen, encourage, and refine one another.
A seared conscience resists conviction. A sharpened heart welcomes it.
Choosing Sensitivity
The Holy Spirit continually calls us toward repentance, humility, and growth. When we respond quickly to His conviction, our hearts remain tender. We become more discerning, more teachable, and more useful in God's kingdom.
The question is not whether correction will come. The question is whether we will resist it until our hearts grow numb or receive it until our lives become more like Christ.
Prayer
Lord, never allow my heart to grow hard toward Your voice. Keep my conscience tender and responsive to Your Spirit. Surround me with people who sharpen my faith, lovingly correct me, and encourage me to grow closer to You. Give me the humility to receive correction with gratitude and the courage to live according to Your truth each day. In Jesus' name, amen.
