CHAPTER ONE

The Weight of What Cannot Be Seen

Brad never planned for life to feel this heavy. He sat on the edge of his bed early in the morning while the world outside still slept. The quiet was thick enough to feel like a presence of its own.

His son, Gabriel, still rested in the other room, breathing softly in the rhythm of a child who trusted that the world was safe because his father was nearby. Brad wished he felt the same safety.

He rubbed his hands together, palms warm from tension and whispered the verse that had followed him for weeks.

Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

He knew the words in his mind but living them felt like crossing an invisible bridge with no ropes. He felt stretched between what he believed and what he saw.

The bills were stacked on the counter. The job situation seemed to shift every time stability appeared close. Memories carried weight he rarely spoke about. Faith was supposed to be strength, yet some days felt heavier than he expected.

Later that afternoon, Justin knocked at the door. Gabriel ran toward him with excitement. Relief filled Brad because certain people carry a reminder that you are truly seen.

“You look tired,” Justin said gently.

“I am.”

“Tell me what is happening.”

Brad lowered his eyes. “I am trying to walk by faith. I am trying to trust Jesus in places where nothing moves. Some days feel like everything works against me.”

Justin sat quietly beside him. “Faith that sees beyond sight stretches every fear. Faith brings people into places where trust becomes necessary. You do not walk through this season alone.”

Something quiet whispered beneath the noise inside Brad. Jesus already stood ahead of him. Human eyes simply could not see the pathway yet.
