CHAPTER 6

Blessing the One Who Spoke Against You

Grace often carries greater power than retaliation.

"Bless them that curse you."

Matthew 5:44

Carla replayed the conversation in her mind more times than she could count. Certain moments refuse to leave easily. Some words continue repeating long after voices grow silent. This conversation became one of those moments.

The words felt sharp. Public. Unnecessary.

"I don't trust her," the woman said loudly enough for others nearby to hear. "She's fake."

Carla felt the sting immediately. A polite smile remained on her face, yet something inside burned. She served faithfully. She gave generously. She loved sincerely.

Now this.

Questions followed her home. Confusion followed. Pain followed.

That evening anger found its way into her prayers.

"Jesus, You heard that. That wasn't fair."

Part of her wanted to defend herself. Explanations formed naturally. Arguments felt justified. Corrections seemed necessary. Another thought interrupted those reactions. Matthew 5:44. Bless them that curse you.

Carla did not want to.

The instruction felt impossible. Blessing someone who wounded her felt unfair. Grace often sounds beautiful until grace becomes personal.

That night Carla prayed a dangerous prayer.

"Jesus, help me bless her."

Resistance immediately surfaced inside her chest. Then something changed. Warmth slowly replaced tension.

She saw a picture rise in her spirit. Words became arrows. Some arrows carried injury. Others carried healing. She realized something important. The choice remained hers. She could choose where to aim them.

Days later Carla saw the woman again. No dramatic confrontation happened. No emotional speech. No attempt to defend herself.

Carla smiled sincerely.

"I appreciate you," she said simply.

The woman looked startled.

Weeks passed. Life continued moving forward. Then one afternoon the woman approached Carla with her eyes lowered.

"I judged you," she admitted quietly. "I was wrong."

Later Carla learned pieces of the woman's story. Deep wounds. Past betrayals. Disappointments carried for years. Words once aimed toward Carla had never begun with Carla. Those words became shields long before they became weapons.

Something powerful happened. Blessing broke what defense never could.

Carla learned a truth she would carry long after that moment. Blessing is not weakness. Blessing carries spiritual authority. Continue reading and discover what happens when a lifetime of words becomes the legacy someone leaves behind.
