Morning sunlight rose over the city like a promise. Bobby sat outside the shelter with coffee in his hands and watched people come and go. Nothing around him looked different. Something inside him had changed.
He was no longer the man who automatically said yes.
Miss Ethel stepped outside carrying warmth in her smile.
He smiled.
"Been doin' a lot of thinkin'."
She laughed softly.
They sat together in comfortable silence. Then Bobby asked a question.
"Miss Ethel, you ever help people so much you forget how to help yourself?"
She stirred her coffee slowly.
"They tell people how to walk into your life and how to treat you."
Her words settled deeply. Grace said love needed wisdom. Miss Ethel said love needed boundaries. Truth kept arriving from every direction.
Later that afternoon Terry stumbled toward the shelter. Dirty. Hungry. Angry. Bobby had seen him before. Always asking for money. Always shouting.
Instinct told Bobby to reach into his pocket. This time he paused.
Terry stared back. Confused. Angry.
"Man, you always help me."
Bobby stood calmly.
Silence stretched. Then Terry lowered his head.
"Alright man... I'll eat."
Later that night Miss Ethel smiled.
For the first time in years Bobby felt something new. Strength. Not guilt. Not exhaustion. Strength.
Boundaries no longer felt selfish. Boundaries felt sacred.
