Weeks passed and Bobby's life found rhythm. Mornings began with coffee and prayer. Afternoons filled with helping Miss Ethel and speaking with people drifting through the shelter. Autumn settled over the city. Inside Bobby's heart, something steadier had begun growing.
Grace continued visiting often. She carried her calm smile and always asked the same question.
He usually laughed.
"Better than yesterday."
Then one morning she did not come. Not the next morning. Not the next one either.
Miss Ethel noticed Bobby looking toward the shelter door.
Bobby smiled faintly.
"Just wanted to thank her proper for that prayer."
Days stretched into weeks. Grace had moved away to help women in recovery. Bobby felt happy for her. Still, sadness settled quietly inside him.
Grace had become more than friendship. Grace helped him see himself differently.
One evening rain beat softly against shelter windows. Bobby sat alone with his Bible open.
People had always left. Friends. Family. Faces from the streets.
Grace leaving felt different. Not emptiness. Growth.
Her words returned once more.
Maybe Jesus was teaching Bobby something deeper. Dependence on people had limits. Dependence on Jesus did not.
Soon people began approaching Bobby with questions. Advice. Guidance. Hope.
One young man asked:
Bobby smiled gently.
"I used to think sayin' yes made me strong."
"Now I know listenin' does."
Outside, rain softened into drizzle. Streetlights reflected across wet pavement.
Bobby finally understood something. Grace never disappeared. Grace became part of the strength Jesus was building inside him.
