Chapter Four

The God Who Did

Beginning the Story
Chapter Four
What I Learned at the Altar

God Was There

I spent a long time asking God to change what was happening around me. Eventually, I began to recognize what He was doing within me.

Looking back over the years, I can see that the story was never only about what happened around me. It was also about what was happening within me. I had spent so much time asking God to change my circumstances that I eventually had to ask a different question: What was God teaching me while I was walking through them?

The God Who Stayed

God was present in the moments I understood and in the moments I did not. He was there when I was exhausted, when I was praying, when I was carrying questions nobody else knew about, and when I left the altar without the answer I had hoped for. I often measured God's presence by whether my circumstances changed. I had to learn that His presence was not dependent on getting the outcome I wanted.

Over six and a half years, some things were lost and some questions remained unanswered. I cannot honestly say that everything worked out the way I wanted. What I can say is that God did not leave me in the middle of it.

What Prayer Changed in Me

Prayer taught me surrender. I could be a husband without being able to save a marriage by myself. I could be a father without being able to control every circumstance surrounding my child. I could work hard, remain responsible, and keep showing up while still facing things that were outside my hands.

That realization was painful, but it also brought freedom. I did not have to pretend everything was fine, and I did not have to turn anyone into a villain in order to tell the truth about what I experienced. I could acknowledge what hurt, examine my own choices honestly, and bring the rest to God.

The Prayers Nobody Heard

There were prayers that nobody else heard. Some were spoken quietly, some were tears, and some were questions I could not put into words. God knew them all. He knew what I was carrying before I knew how to explain it, and He knew what I needed even when I was asking for something completely different.

That is what the altar means to me now. It is not simply the place where I asked God to change my circumstances. It is the place where I learned that I could bring the truth of my life to Him without pretending, and that I could trust Him with what I could not carry.

The God Who Did

When I look back, I do not see a story in which every prayer produced the answer I expected. I see a story in which God kept meeting me. He sustained me when I was tired, gave me strength when I had reached my limit, and kept drawing me back to prayer when I wanted to understand everything before I trusted anything.

Faith became less about knowing how the story would end and more about trusting God while I was still inside it. The circumstances did not become easy simply because I believed, but I was no longer carrying them in the same way.

That is what God did. He did not erase every difficult chapter, but He changed the way I walked through them. He taught me that love could remain when control was gone, that prayer could remain when answers were delayed, and that hope could remain even when the future was uncertain.

I was alone at the altar, but I was never alone with God.

The prayers nobody heard were heard by the God who did.
