THE STRENGTH IN TRUTH

Chapter Seven

A Winter Test

Winter rolled into the city without mercy. Cold air cut through every street and every alley. Breath turned to mist. Shelters filled beyond capacity. Stories of pain and survival filled every room.

Bobby worked harder than ever. Blankets. Soup. Encouragement. Prayer. He moved quietly from person to person helping wherever he could.

Snow began falling one evening as the shelter doors opened. A tall figure stepped inside. Wet clothes. Tired eyes. A familiar face.

"Raymond."

The man froze. Slowly he lowered his head.

"Yeah... it's me."

His voice cracked beneath exhaustion.

"Didn't know where else to go."

Miss Ethel looked toward Bobby.

"You know him?"

Bobby nodded quietly. Old memories rushed back. Anger. Pain. Regret.

Then Bobby looked directly at Raymond.

"You can stay here. Food's here. Blankets are here. Heat's here."
"But I ain't givin' you money."

Raymond swallowed hard.

"I understand."

Later that evening Bobby carried coffee toward Raymond's cot.

He sat beside him quietly.

"I used to think sayin' yes was love."

"Now I know love tells truth."

"You were never my enemy, Raymond."

"The lies were."

Raymond lowered his eyes. Tears formed.

"You mind if I come to church with you sometime?"

"I think I'm ready to start over."

Bobby smiled.

"I'd like that."

The following morning they walked together through snow covered streets. Each step felt lighter. Each step felt new.

Outside winter winds still howled. Inside Bobby's heart, spring quietly began.
