THE STRENGTH IN TRUTH

Chapter Eight

The Shelter Within

Spring arrived softly like a whispered promise. Cold nights faded. The weight Bobby once carried no longer pressed so heavily against his heart. Storms had passed through his life. Storms from the streets. Storms from inside himself. Steadiness had finally begun replacing survival.

The shelter stayed busy. New faces appeared each week carrying stories that sounded painfully familiar. Broken homes. Lost jobs. Regret. Loneliness.

Bobby listened differently now. He heard more than words. He heard hearts.

Miss Ethel smiled one evening while watching him speak with people.

"You've become someone people look up to, Bobby."

"You've got wisdom now."

Bobby laughed quietly.

"If I got wisdom, I got there after runnin' outta pride."

Later that night a younger man named Devin sat beside him. His hands trembled. His eyes looked tired.

"I don't wanna care anymore."

"Every time I help people, somebody hurts me."

Bobby sat silently for a moment. The words sounded familiar. Years earlier those same feelings lived inside him.

Finally he smiled gently.

"Caring ain't the problem."

"It's how you carry it."

"You can't save people by destroyin' yourself."

"Love don't mean losin' your peace."

"It means protectin' it."

Night eventually settled over the city. Bobby stepped outside beneath a sky filled with stars. He thought about Carl. Raymond. Grace. Miss Ethel. The streets. The pain. The healing.

"Thank You, Jesus... for never giving up on me."

Inside his pocket rested Grace's folded prayer. Old creases covered the paper. The edges had worn thin. The words still lived inside him.

Bobby looked upward and smiled.

"Guess I finally found my shelter."

"Not in walls."

"Not in money."

"In You."

For the first time in years Bobby no longer felt like someone surviving. He felt restored.
