PREFACE
The Journey Behind Changed
Before the journey begins, there is one thing I want you to understand: this book was not written from a place of having everything figured out. It was written from the middle of a life that Jesus is still shaping.
Writing Changed became a way for me to put into words a question that had been growing in my heart for some time. I had spent much of my life thinking about what made me different, particularly as an autistic man learning to navigate a world that does not always understand the way I think, communicate, or experience things. Eventually, I realized that being different was not the deepest question I needed to answer.
The deeper question was what Jesus was doing with my life.
That realization began taking shape after I heard Different by Micah Tyler. The song made me think about difference in a way I had not considered before. Instead of focusing only on how I was different from other people, I began thinking about whether my life was becoming different because I was following Jesus.
That distinction changed the direction of my thinking. I could spend my life trying to explain why I am different, trying to gain acceptance, or trying to make other people understand me. None of those things, however, could answer the question that mattered most: am I allowing Jesus Christ to change me?
That became the heart of Changed.
I am not asking Jesus to erase the person He created me to be. My autism is part of my story, and I have learned that I do not have to reject that part of myself simply because other people may not understand it. At the same time, I cannot use my differences as an excuse to resist the work Jesus wants to do in my heart.
There are things in my life that need to change. There are attitudes that need correction, choices that need surrender, and moments when I have needed to admit that saying I trust Jesus is not the same as actually trusting Him. Following Him requires more than words. It requires a willingness to let Him lead me even when His direction challenges what I want.
"Following Jesus means allowing Him to change what needs changing without losing sight of who He created you to be."
That is an important part of my story because I have learned that transformation and identity are not enemies. Jesus can change my heart without asking me to become somebody else. He can correct my behavior without erasing my personality. He can teach me to grow while still allowing me to be the person He created me to be.
THE PURPOSE OF THIS BOOK
A Journey, Not A Formula
Changed is not a formula for becoming a perfect Christian. It is an invitation to honestly examine what happens when we place our lives in the hands of Jesus Christ.
The chapters ahead explore that journey from different directions. We will consider what change actually means, what surrender costs, what happens when we struggle with the desires of the flesh, and how the evidence of a changed life becomes visible through the way we live.
We will also consider what it means to stand alone, remain faithful when we are misunderstood, and continue following Jesus when obedience is harder than simply saying the right thing. These are not ideas I have learned from a distance. They are lessons I am still learning in my own walk with Christ.
I want you to read these pages with that understanding. I am not standing at the end of the road telling you how I successfully completed the journey. I am walking the road too.
There will be things in these pages that challenge me as much as they challenge you. That is intentional. If the question behind this book is truly, Has Jesus changed me?, then none of us should be afraid to examine our own hearts.
Read With An Open Heart
As you move through this book, do not worry about comparing your story with mine. Your life is your own, and your relationship with Jesus is personal. Instead, allow each chapter to give you an opportunity to pause, reflect, pray, and consider where you are in your own walk with Him.
You may discover areas where you have grown. You may discover areas where you still need to surrender. You may even discover that something you once thought was part of your identity is actually something Jesus is asking you to release.
Whatever you discover, bring it honestly to Him.
My hope is simple. I want these pages to point you toward Jesus rather than toward me. I want you to see that genuine transformation is not about creating an image that looks spiritual from the outside. It is about allowing Jesus to work within us until the way we live begins to reflect what we say we believe.
I also hope that anyone who has ever felt different or misunderstood will find encouragement here. You do not have to become someone else to have value. You do not have to hide your differences to be loved by God. But you can still grow, surrender, change, and become more like Jesus.
That is the journey.
So before you turn the page, I invite you to carry one question with you throughout the entire book: Has Jesus truly changed me?
Do not answer it too quickly. Let the question follow you through the pages ahead, into your prayers, and into the quiet places where you can be completely honest with God.
Now, let us begin.
