Respect
Adults deserve to be taught as adults. We never use childish language or assume that age limits a person's ability to understand.
ABOUT TECHNOLOGY FOR LIFE
We believe every adult deserves the opportunity to understand technology without feeling embarrassed, rushed, or left behind.
WHY WE EXIST
There are adults who remember when a computer was something you saw in an office, a classroom, or a television show rather than something sitting in every home. There are others who simply never had the opportunity to learn how computers work.
Technology for Life was created for them and for anyone else who wants to learn. We provide a place where adults can ask questions, practice new skills, make mistakes, and try again without being judged.
We are not interested in making learners feel behind. We are interested in helping them move forward.
WHAT WE BELIEVE
Adults deserve to be taught as adults. We never use childish language or assume that age limits a person's ability to understand.
People learn at different speeds. We make room for repetition, questions, practice, and individual assistance.
The measure of success is not how quickly someone finishes a lesson. It is whether they leave knowing they can do it.
We teach concepts instead of asking learners to memorize a collection of buttons and instructions.
Our promise
“There are no stupid questions here.”
If you need it explained again, we explain it again. If you need more practice, we practice. Learning is not a race.
DEVICE SUPPORT
Windows laptops are the primary platform for Technology for Life. Windows is the platform on which instruction is strongest and most detailed.
Chromebooks are also welcome. The program includes support for ChromeOS, Google tools, web browsing, email, online safety, and other browser based skills.
Mac laptops may be used, but support is more limited. General computing concepts may transfer, but Mac specific instruction is not currently a primary focus.
All classes are held online through Microsoft Teams. No physical class location is available. You must download and install the Microsoft Teams app before class. A compatible desktop computer may be used to join online instruction, as well as a laptop. Reliable internet access is required.
CLASS TIMEFRAME
A typical learning session is planned for at least six weeks, meeting one day each week for two hours. This gives learners time to return to skills, practice between meetings, and build confidence.
Not every study requires the same amount of time. A simpler study may move more quickly, while a hands on study may require additional weeks for practice, repetition, troubleshooting, and individual support.
Classes are provided at no cost. Learners are encouraged to contribute through their time, attention, willingness to learn, encouragement, or ability to help others. Financial donations are welcome when possible, but no learner is required to donate or volunteer to participate.
THE ROAD AHEAD
Our first phase focuses on laptop computers because they provide a strong foundation for understanding how digital technology works while remaining practical for learners to bring to class.
Mobile phones and tablets will have their own separate learning opportunity. Once learners understand the fundamentals of computing, they can carry that knowledge into other interfaces and devices.
