FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

It is okay to ask.

Here are some of the questions learners may have before beginning Technology for Life.

Start with what you want to know.

Who are these classes for?

Technology for Life is designed for adult learners, including people who grew up before computers were part of everyday life and older adults who want to continue learning new technology skills.

Do I need computer experience?

No. Phase One is designed to establish the foundations, so you can begin even if you have very little or no computer experience.

How much do classes cost?

Classes are free. There is no tuition or class fee. Learners are encouraged to contribute through their time, attention, willingness to practice, patience, encouragement, or ability to help others. Financial donations are welcome when a learner is able, but no learner is required to donate money or volunteer in order to participate.

Are classes online?

Yes. All Technology for Life classes are held online through Microsoft Teams. No in person class location is available. You must download and install the Microsoft Teams app before class, and reliable internet access is required. A compatible laptop or desktop computer may be used to join class.

What kind of computer should I bring?

A Windows laptop is the primary supported option for Phase One instruction. Chromebooks are also welcome, especially for ChromeOS, Google tools, web browsing, email, online safety, and other browser based skills. Mac laptops may be used, but Mac specific instruction is currently limited. All classes are online through Microsoft Teams, so a compatible desktop computer may be used. You must download and install the Microsoft Teams app before class.

Can I bring a Chromebook?

Yes. Chromebooks are welcome. The instructor is comfortable working with ChromeOS and Google based tools, and many foundational skills transfer well to Chromebook use.

Can I bring a Mac?

You may bring a Mac laptop, but Mac specific instruction is currently limited. Technology for Life's strongest hands on instruction is on Windows laptops, while Chromebook support is also available.

Can I use a desktop computer?

How long is each class?

Each weekly class meeting is designed to last two hours, including instruction, practice, questions, review, and individual support.

How long is a learning session?

A typical learning session is planned for at least six weeks, meeting one day each week for two hours. This is a minimum framework, not a rigid finish date. Some studies may take less time, while studies involving substantial hands on work, repetition, troubleshooting, or individual assistance may take longer.

What do I need for class?

You need a compatible computer, reliable internet access, and the Microsoft Teams app downloaded and installed before class. Windows laptops are the primary platform, Chromebooks are welcome, and compatible desktops may be used. Mac specific instruction is limited.

What if everyone else learns faster than I do?

Learning is not a race. We make room for different learning speeds, repetition, questions, and individual assistance.

Will I be tested before I can attend?

No entrance test is required. You do not have to prove what you already know before you begin.

Will there be classes for phones and tablets?

Mobile devices are planned as a separate phase. Laptop fundamentals come first because they provide a strong foundation for understanding computing.

When will classes begin?

Class dates, online meeting instructions, and registration details will be posted on the Schedule and Registration pages once they are established.
